Pre-Conception Health That Actually Moves the Needle
If you want to conceive quickly, the pre-conception health groundwork matters more than any supplement marketing suggests. The list below is short on purpose because each item has solid evidence behind it [src].
Folic acid. 400 mcg daily from at least three months before TTC. 5 mg daily if you're on certain medications, have diabetes, BMI over 30, a previous neural-tube affected pregnancy, or a family history of neural tube defects.

- Anabolic steroids and testosterone supplementation suppress sperm production, sometimes for many months after stopping.
- Heavy alcohol lowers sperm count and morphology.
- Untreated varicocele, certain medications, occupational chemical exposure: all worth raising with a GP if relevant.

What Doesn't Help (And What to Stop Spending Money On)
A short and slightly grumpy list, because the marketing in this space is relentless.
- Fertility tea blends. No evidence that any commercial blend improves conception rates.
- Seed cycling. No clinical evidence.
- Lying still after sex with legs in the air. Sperm capable of fertilisation reach the cervix within minutes. Position theatrics don't help.
- Vitex / chaste tree berry. Weak evidence, and it can disrupt cycles in women who didn't have a hormonal imbalance to begin with.
- Detoxes, womb cleanses, lymphatic fertility massages. No evidence.
- CoQ10, myo-inositol, vitamin D. These have evidence in specific groups: CoQ10 in poor responders, myo-inositol in PCOS, vitamin D in deficiency. They are not blanket "fertility boosters" for the general population.
Don't replace a GP visit with supplements. A 20-minute consultation that catches a thyroid issue, a vitamin D deficiency, or a PCOS pattern moves your conception odds far more than any over-the-counter bottle.
Tracking Tools: OPKs, BBT, and Cycle Apps
Pick the lightest set that gives you useful information.
- OPKs (urine LH tests) identify the 24 to 36 hour fertile peak. Most useful single tool for couples with regular cycles.
- BBT charting confirms ovulation retrospectively. Useful across two or three cycles to map your pattern; not useful for live timing.

- Smart-bracelet temperature trackers (Oura, Tempdrop) are improving but aren't yet validated in PCOS or shift-work populations.
A reasonable starter stack for someone wanting to conceive quickly: cervical mucus tracking + one OPK in the late afternoon from cycle day 10. That's it.
Special Cases: PCOS, Irregular Cycles, and Endometriosis
The advice above assumes a relatively typical fertility picture. Three groups need a different plan.
