The 90-Day Window, Why It Matters
Folliculogenesis (the process from antral follicle recruitment to a mature egg ready for retrieval) takes around three months. The eggs your clinic will collect are already being prepared before your first injection.
That is good news. It means diet, sleep, alcohol, smoking, exercise, and key supplements have a window where they can plausibly reach the cohort. It also means perfectionism is unnecessary: pick two or three changes you can keep for 12 weeks, not ten you will drop in two.

Supplements Before IVF, What the Evidence Supports
What supplements to take before IVF is the question most patients have already half-answered with a Google search. The evidence-backed shortlist is shorter than the marketing list.
- Prenatal multivitamin with 400 to 800 mcg folic acid: standard. 5 mg if BMI is over 30, on metformin, or with a history of neural tube defects.
- Vitamin D: replete to at least 75 nmol/L if deficient.
- Omega-3 (DHA/EPA): supportive evidence for embryo quality and implantation.
- CoQ10 200 to 600 mg/day: mitochondrial support for oocytes. Start 8 to 12 weeks before stims. Evidence is strongest in women over 35 or with prior poor response.
- DHEA and melatonin: case-selected, doctor-prescribed only. DHEA has RCT support in diminished ovarian reserve (low AMH) and is not a blanket recommendation. Melatonin is investigational.

- Caffeine capped at one cup of coffee per day

- Smoking and vaping stopped at least 3 months prior
- Sleep 7 to 9 hours; melatonin secretion supports oocyte quality and your stress response

Exercise during the IVF stimulation phase needs to change. Once stims start, your ovaries enlarge and become heavier. High-impact exercise (running, HIIT, heavy lifting) raises the risk of ovarian torsion, a surgical emergency. Switch to walking, gentle yoga, swimming, or Pilates from the first injection.
Egg Retrieval Recovery, What the Next 7 Days Look Like
Egg retrieval recovery is shorter than most patients expect and longer than they plan for.
The procedure itself is a short sedation with vaginal-probe needle aspiration of the follicles. Most patients are home within a few hours. Expect bloating, mild cramping, and light spotting for 24 to 72 hours. Plan pelvic rest, hydration with electrolytes, and no heavy lifting for around a week.
The important thing to watch for is OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome). Red flags include:
- Rapid weight gain of more than 2 kg in a day
- Severe abdominal pain not eased by paracetamol
- Reduced urine output
- Breathlessness or chest tightness
Any of these warrant calling your clinic the same day. PCOS, high AMH, and high antral follicle count raise OHSS risk; modern antagonist protocols with agonist triggers and freeze-all transfers have substantially reduced severe OHSS. Mental, Logistical and Work Prep
The non-medical prep is the part most patients underestimate.
- Block calendar space for monitoring scans (every 2 to 3 days during stims) and the retrieval day plus 24 hours after
- Tell one trusted person at work if it helps; you are not obliged to disclose
- Arrange childcare and transport for retrieval day (sedation rules out driving)
- Book a counselling slot at your clinic before stims begin, not after a setback
